Archery Deer
Here
at Rimrock Outfitters we specialize in hunting Coues deer. When
we're not hunting elk here in Arizona I'm scouting for Coues deer
all the time. Coues deer are my passion and I put most all of my
scoutings efforts into learning more about them and areas they inhabit. Here
in Arizona mule deer and Coues deer inhabit the same areas and
the choice is yours as to which you'd like to hunt. We don't like
to spread ourselves thin so we only like to have a couple (2-3) hunters
in camp during the 5 day hunts so we can be most effective and help
you harvest a nice trophy. I take my hunting and scouting very
serious and I ask the same of my hunters when in the field. Give us
a chance to show you what an Arizona archery deer hunt is all about,
the scenery alone will take your breath away so bring plenty of film.
There are also a couple different choices you can make when deciding
on what sort of archery deer hunt best suits your needs. Here's
a description of the hunts.
1. In the middle of August and through
mid September your best way to harvest a Coues a buck is by sitting in
a treestand over water or a mineral lick. I place my stands
in the areas that I feel your chances of being successful are
greatest. If sitting isn't for you we can sure do some spot
and stalk if you wish. Although not a high percentage way of
harvesting a buck it does break up the monotony of sitting. This
time of year is very hot in Arizona. Mule deer tend to
water in morning and evening but Coues deer seem to like the middle
of the day. Coues deer, in my experience, are most active around 10:00AM
to 3:00PM. My Coues bucks have been taken around 10:30
to noon.
2. Come middle of December archery season opens again and goes to the
end of January. Mule deer and Coues deer rut in the latter part of December
and often times to the end of January. The best time to hunt the rut is
the first couple weeks of January when the bucks are most active in search
of "hot" does. Again, you can choose what style of hunting you'd
like to do, treestanding or spot and stalk. My treestands are set up near
scrapes and highly used game trails. I use trail cameras a lot and
let them do the scouting for me this time of year. (Click here to see
the live deer photos in the photo gallery). If you wish we can also
try the spot and stalk method of archery hunting. These Coues deer
out here in the Southwest are very used to being hunted by mountain lions and
are extremely wary animals. Mule deer bucks this time of year tend to let
their guard down and allow themselves to be in the open following the does. I
saw a good number of nice bucks, this past January, out in the wide open flats
following herds of does.
This hunt can also be combined with a Javalina hunt as well. Lottery
applications must be in by October in order to hunt them as well during the
January archery
hunt. If you've got any questions please email us and we'll get back
to you as soon as we possibly can.
